Fall is such a wonderful time to have a wedding. Crisp air and Autumn hues just lend themselves for warm and oh so inviting celebrations.
Some of my favorite venues for Fall weddings are wineries, apple orchards, farms and rustic looking clubhouses with big old fireplaces.
Natural decorations that show off the beauty of the season can be inexpensive and stunning. Outlining a processional aisle with autumn leaves easily sets the tone for a fall wedding and can cost you nothing if you have your cadre of friends collect them the month before your wedding. Remember Runaway Bride when Julia Roberts finally married Richard Gere? The only decoration at that ceremony was a hill full of beautiful fall leaves.
I love to decorate with barrels of apples and apples as place-card or candle holders. And I am nuts about nuts in table-scapes. Decorative bowls of nuts (with nutcrackers handy) on each guest table, tall vases filled with nuts and topped with fall flowers, or nuts just strewn around a centerpiece provide some great accents. My girlfriend had a chocolate iced wedding cake decorated with maple candy leaves and marzipan fruit. The cake was surrounded by a variety of nuts and candles on a gold tablecloth; it was…fabulous.
I went to a wedding last year that served hot apple cider with cinnamon sticks and also had hot buttered rum drinks. At the end of the evening they handed out waxed bags filled with warm mini apple cinnamon doughnuts for the trip home. I am certain no doughnuts actually made it all the way home! At another wedding they had caramel apples as their wedding favors – what could remind you of a fall day more than a caramel apple?

We bought autum wedding stamps for our ivory and gold invitations and we made our placecards out of leaves (we used gold and black markers).
We had pumpkin ravioli as a first course. For dessert we had baked apples individually wrapped in pastry and toppped with candied walnuts- served with vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel sauce. It was so much better than any typical wedding cake and fit perfectly into our Autumn themed wedding.
We used Stalks of Wheat, sunflowers, and autumn leaves as the main items in our wedding decorations. My bridesmaids wore brown dresses which were great background for their sunflower bouquets.
We gave everyone a jar of honey from our local organic farmer that we decorated with our own personal label (it said “thank you for making our wedding day so sweet!”) and tied raffia ribbon around each jar with a few wheat stalk tops with one silk sunflower tucked in the ribbon to finish the whole fall look. The honey jars really looked great at each placesetting and went great with the very tall vases filled with wheat stalks and sunflowers on each table.
Our cake was surrounded on a bed of autumn leaves that we washed and rewashed to get rid of any bugs before they were used on our cake table (and on our buffet table as well).
Our wedding was held on a farm – the ceremony by an old oak tree and the reception was in their beautiful barn that was brand new (no animals had ever been in it!). We loved our Fall Wedding!
We used loads of votive candles that sat on autumn leaves, and we had every kind of mum you could think of in every autumn color. We gave ingredients for a mulled wine recipe (which we had served during the reception as well) as favors. We rented copper and chocolate brown linens which really looked beautiful with the autumn leaves.
We had a spice cake filled with fresh bananas and whipped cream and it was served with a maple leaf on each cake plate. Yummy!
